My name is Jag and I am retired. My Wife is Ajit and she is a Doctor who has specialized for over 30 Years in IVF and Gynaecology, and continues to do so. We are both Sikhs and one of the most important principles of our faith is “ Sewa “ helping others without any expectations and by carrying out this service it demonstrates the Sikh belief in equality and the importance of ALL people.
In March 2020 COVID Lockdown started and there were so many sad stories of loved ones being cut off from seeing each other, Nursing and Care Homes having to ban visits, Vulnerable Group Individuals not being visited by Social Support Groups and more. Ajit and I (and our cats Roly & Poly) decided to do something about it and believe it or not our star helper was someone called “ Alexa “ and “ We Care “ was started - a Family run charitable group where we don’t canvass for or accept donations.
Amazon had for years developed the Amazon Alexa Products, a device which ran on great Artificial Intelligence and was voice activated and was mainly known for giving you access to millions of songs. I had been a fan of the Alexa devices for a while before they even came to the UK as they had so much to offer apart from songs. Then a new development occurred where Amazon launched an Alexa Device with an 8-inch screen. Then we had a eureka moment in seeing clearly how this lightweight 8-inch screen voice-activated device with great built-in speakers and a panoramic view camera could help those cut off from their loved ones and all they needed was WIFI.
During lockdown and th COVID period we sent and installed remotely many programmed Alexa devices to Nursing and Care Homes so they were able to do hands-free video calls with their loved ones. We then sent programmed units to Doctors surgeries and worked with NHS CCGs to ensure that GPs were able to see Patients at home on video calls. We then realized that many Social care support groups weren’t able to visit vulnerable group individuals at home so we sent programmed Alexas to them as well- individuals who were visually impaired, suffered from Parkinsons, Dementia, Loneliness, were in Hospices and more.
We also quickly realized that the Alexa Device was not only for Covid but for beyond and that it not only helped the person being cared for but their Carers too, as it alleviated their anxiety and stress when they were not with their loved ones.
